That couple in the picture? That would be us. We are Willem and Alice Specken.
I (Alice) am the gardener/plant junkie. Also, since we do occasionally get bad weather, I play away at crochet (see our album *Crochet*). My crochet work is also for sale, by the way.
Willem does the strimming, he is in full control of a couple of walls, he does any odd jobs I ask of him and he maintains this lovely website, which I could NEVER do myself. He is also (apart from a very kind and clever man) a very good musician. He plays the guitar and he sings. Check out the "Willem's Music" page or find him on YouTube: MrWhasp.
L to R: The Fluffster, Minnalouche, Zorro (*hammm!*) and Tigsie. AKA: The Famous Tabby Team!
We share our acre with four cats (Tigsie, Fluffster, Zorro and Minnalouche, better known as *The Tabby Team*) and one Bearded Dragon (Mr. Jinx), all of whom you can view in our photo album “Our Pets”. If you decide to visit us here on the Peninsula, be prepared. Our cats absolutely LOVE guests and attention. So much so that they will throw themselves in (or under) you and/or your car, so you won't be able to leave.
Mr. Jinx. Meet the most adorable Bearded Dragon in the world.
Ardnageena is the name of our lovely and very old traditional Irish Cottage. Its Irish name is “Ard Na Gaoine”, which means “Height of the flint stone”.
Since, as the name of the house indicates, we live on solid rock, it was a challenge to create an attractive garden. But we were determined. We only had to find a clever way to do it.
We decided to build raised beds. With a lot of help from a kind neighbour, large rocks were used as walls, filled up with a mixture of local topsoil, local cow manure and bags (and bags, and bags, and bags....) of multipurpose compost. Nothing fancy, but our plants seem to love it.
In only six years it has become a mature, varied and colourful garden with plenty to see. My pride and joy, if I’m very honest. Parts of the garden are left to the wild. Because after all, some weeds are truly gorgeous.
There is a small heated greenhouse and a large poly tunnel.
Most of the gardening and growing is done by yours truly.
